Chapter 11

The next day Jessie let herself indulge in the luxury of sleeping in before heading to the bar to round up her charges. It was warm for late October, but she felt a chill in the air as she pulled her ancient Prelude into the parking lot at sunset. Jared and Tug waited for her on the porch.

“The ogres know we’re coming,” Jared said after she let them inside the bar and away from any prying eyes and ears lurking outside the building.

“Great. We should be ready to go on time,” she nodded with satisfaction.

As the clear, starlit night settled over the bar, their friends drifted in one by one.

“I like our odds,” Greta said as she perched on a barstool next to Mikael. Rupert waited patiently next to Tug, and LaSalle and Matthias had changed into sturdy leather armor. John texted Jessie to let her know that the wolf pack was en route.

“Good because we didn’t have a lot of reinforcements we could send,” a new voice joined them from the hall.

Isabel, head of the Witch Council, Jessie and Greta’s oldest friend, and Jared’s teacher in the arts of air magic, led a small cluster of witches. Ivan, the water witch who had helped purge Robin of an extreme case of iron poisoning, was with them. He had taken over Caroline’s water magic training at Jessie's request. Riza brought up the rear and ducked out from behind the group to tackle Greta in a hug, at which point Jessie immediately gave up trying to get their attention while they talked defense strategies, and Riza showed Greta her new shield.

“Hey, Isabel. What’s going on? Is something wrong at the Council?” Jessie frowned, casting her eye over the small group. There were only about seven witches, two of whom wore their armor uneasily and handled their weapons with the apparent discomfort of people who were not used to combat.

“You could say that,” Isabel’s tone was grim as she kissed Jessie on the cheek and gave her a quick hug.

“We’re just waiting for Robin to show up with some of Oberon’s guards. John’s lieutenant is on the way with their pack mates too. Otherwise, we’re all set,” Jessie told her.

“It’s good that LaSalle and Matthias will be there. The Fir Darrig are fierce fighters and very sneaky. I’m glad he’s on our side,” Isabel replied with a note of satisfaction– and relief.

“Same here,” Jessie agreed.

“You certainly have a knack for finding the most unlikely allies,” Isabel grinned.

“Oh, she’s always been like this? I thought we were just unlucky,” Nicky examined his fingernails and then ducked, laughing, as Jessie threw a stack of coasters at his head.

“Jessica, focus,” Isabel admonished.

“Fine,” Jessie huffed a sigh.

Jessie and Isabel, who had been born months apart in the same little Scottish village lost to time and memory, were so much alike that they could be sisters. Isabel so closely resembled a bird with her tiny frame and huge, bright brown eyes that seemed to see everything that it was no wonder her base element was air.
